Edinburgh-1988. Hb. 456pp+fold out chart
First published by Oxford University Press, this fine volume has gone through a further three printings. It presents to the general reader, a clear and succinct overview of Church History in Scotland from Roman Britain, through the Medieval Church, Reformation, Establishment etc. right up to 1929 and beyond. With bibliography and useful chart depicting the divisions in the Scottish Church from 1688.
J. H. S. Burleigh was Principal of New College and Professor of Church History at Edinburgh University. He was also, in 1960, moderator of the Church of Scotland. Untrammeled by all but a few footnotes, the narrative pulses on through the main events, not going into the tiniest details. This method makes it easier for reading.
We think that it is, overall, the best modern 1 volume history of the Kirk available at present. It was for years required reading for Divinity students. Ideal for Church study
groups.
